Algebra 1A

Algebra 1A covers the first semester of a two-semester course. The course is based on the TEKS and aligned to the TAKS. For more details, read our TEKS/TAKS Alignment.

Unit 1 provides an introduction to functions, focusing on multiple representations (words, tables, graphs, symbolic).

Unit 2 focuses on linear functions, examining rate of change, the linear parent function, and how to write rules for linear functions.

Unit 3 explores different ways for solving equations, addressing properties for simplifying expressions and methods for solving equations and inequalities.

You will experience some things that you may not have come across before in a mathematics course:
• Learning math by solving real life problems
• Using interactive technology to practice the algebra you learn
• Making use of both graphing calculators and concrete models to represent and understand the mathematics

In each of the three units in this course you will use algebra to help solve different a community problem:
• Investing ways to stop cars from speeding through neighborhoods
• Selecting a citywide trash collector
• Organizing of a fundraiser for an animal shelter

As you tackle the community problems in this course, you will learn how an algebraic expression or equation can help solve a complex real life problem.
